Bleeding gums and loose teeth

Gum disease is the biggest cause of tooth loss.

Bacterial plaque on our teeth takes in calcium from our saliva ,hardens and forms calculus (tarter) which tenaciously sticks to our teeth. This irritates our gums which swell and bleed. This is called gingivitis. In the long run, and occasionally quickly, the bone supporting the teeth shrinks away from the calculus up the tooth causing the tooth to loosen. This is called periodontal disease. Unfortunately it is not yet possible to grow the bone back up the tooth so prevention is much better than cure.

Brushing you teeth twice a day removes the plaque and reduces calculus build up.

In between brushing the calculus slowly builds up and this is what we remove when we scale and polish your teeth. This helps prevents periodontal disease.

On average we usually do a scale and polish every 6 months but this is tailored to your particular needs. Intervals can be as frequent as 3 months or as infrequent as yearly to 2 yearly depending on how well you brush our teeth and how quickly the calculus develops on you.

By far and away the most important factor in the successful treatment of gum disease is how well you brush at home, as it is the daily removal of plaque which keeps it at away.

If you have bleeding gums or lose teeth please, please, contact us to have a check up and scale and polish. With gum disease in particular prevention is better than cure.
